We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — it’s always the right season to travel to western Massachusetts. Spring and summer have their obvious benefits, what with the sunshine and warmth. But give us a chance to convince you about the plus side of life in the Pioneer Valley this time of year. In Western Massachusetts, we love winter. And we’re almost certain you will too.

Food knows no season

Yes, alfresco dining is one of life’s great pleasures. But lucky for all of us, food tastes just as good inside. Looking for a warm and cozy breakfast? Be sure to stop at Union Street Bistro & Bakery in Downtown Easthampton. They’ll set you up with a hot cup of Esselon coffee and whatever delectable donut or pastry your heart desires. Midday, check out the new lunch menu at the Dirty Truth on Main Street in Northampton. For years, you’ve had to wait until 5pm to get your daily Dirty fix. Well wait no longer! The bar is now serving lunch seven days/week, including poutine and a fried chicken sandwich that will make you cry little tears of joy. Prefer your bars at happy hour? They’ve got a pretty major selection of craft beer from near and far, along with a full, locally-sourced and seasonal food menu. If you’re in the mood for something a little more upscale, order a flame-grilled steak from Caminito. And while you wait for your table, enjoy a belly-warming cocktail at their new bar.

Catch up on culture

The best time of year to get caught up on culture is when it’s too cold to be outdoors. Catch the latest indie film at Amherst Cinema, then enjoy a night cap of whiskey or wine at the theater’s neighbor, Amherst Coffee. Through April 12th, enjoy the Black Refractions exhibit at the Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) – a visually stunning and emotionally captivating exhibit visiting from the Studio Museum in Harlem. While you’re on campus, stroll through the Botanic Garden and soak up some much-needed heat and humidity. Take in a performance at the UMass Fine Arts Center. Get lost in nostalgia at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. There are endless activities that don’t require coats or scarves.

Learn to love the cold

Yes, this is a blog post about warming up. But that doesn’t necessarily require being indoors. One strategy many of us employ in Hampshire County this time of year is to get excited about being outside. Try your hand (or snowshoe) at a winter sport. If snow is minimal (or completely melted), you can still get in a lovely hike on any of our mountains. Grab a coffee and wander the streets of Northampton, Amherst, Hadley, or Easthampton. There’s a ton to do and see, and we promise the fresh air will treat you well.

Treat yourself

If all else fails, and you’ve found yourself cold, wet, and in need of a better mood, make a beeline for any one of our world-class relaxation stations. Drop in for a yoga class at River Valley Yoga in Florence, book a deep tissue massage at Elements, or take a (hot) tub at East Heaven.

No matter your idea of getting warm, we can accomodate. Do your thing! But hey, do it here with us.
