Though winter in Western Massachusetts has many charms (softly falling snow, holiday light displays, and cozy cafes come to mind), by the time March rolls around everyone is yearning for spring and clamoring to get out and about. Cure cabin fever with these late winter family-friendly activities in Hampshire County.

Make the most of maple sugaring season with a visit to the North Hadley Sugar Shack. Check out the evaporator room to see how maple syrup is made and wander the grounds to look for tree taps. Indulge in pancakes, waffles, and French toast (plus other breakfast staples) drizzled with the Shack’s own 100% maple syrup. The wait can be long during peak sugaring season so arriving early is a must—they open at 7am.

After breakfast, head toward Northampton, stopping for a caffeine fix at Esselon Café in Hadley, where the coffee is hand-roasted twice a week on site. Don’t forget to grab a bag of beans to bring home!

Catch an early glimpse of spring at the Smith College Botanic Garden’s Spring Bulb Show at the Lyman Conservatory (March 2 – 17). The bright colors and fresh scents of blossoming hyacinths, narcissi, irises, lilies, and tulips will delight adults and kids alike. Transport yourself to the tropics in the Palm House and check out eye-catching cacti in the Succulent House.

Need a break? Pop into Northampton’s Forbes Library for a mid-morning wind-down. The children’s department is the perfect place for the kids to read a story, color a picture, or say hello to the resident fish, Moondust and Paco.

Fuel up for the afternoon’s adventures with lunch at Jake’s Restaurant in downtown Northampton. Kids will appreciate the all-day breakfast (if they didn’t get enough at the Sugar Shack) and parents will enjoy bottomless coffee, mimosas, daily specials, local ingredients, and friendly service.

If the weather’s good, head over to Look Memorial Park in Florence for some fresh air. There are four great playgrounds for families to explore, plus plenty of open space for running around. Come back in-season for the steamer train, pedal boats, spray park, and zoo.

If March is behaving more like a lion than a lamb, make the short drive to Easthampton’s Mill180 Park, an indoor urban hydroponic park. Play corn hole while sipping a local brew and let the kids explore the space which features plants, fun sculptures, jumbo Styrofoam blocks, and more.

Before heading home, stop at River Valley Co-op in Northampton where you can pick up organic produce, freshly prepared deli sandwiches and hot bar items, and locally-made wine and beer for a flavorful and satisfying end to a day of Hampshire County family fun.
