In Hampshire County, we freak out over fall. Yes, we’ve got the gorgeous foliage. And sure, the weather tends to be pretty perfect this time of year (blue skies, high of 72 degrees, jeans with a sweater and no coat). But we’ve got much more than leaves and crisp breezes. Fall in Western Massachusetts is simply sublime, and to entice you to make us your next weekend getaway destination, we’ve catalogued our top five reasons to get to Hampshire County while the gettin’ is good (right now).

1. It's a Foodie's Paradise

Do we always start our lists with food? A lot of the time, yes — but for good reason. We have amazing food! We love to eat! And people travel from far and wide to sample our culinary delights. It’s a foodie’s paradise because we know our stuff. Fresh and local ingredients drive the menus. Farm to table is becoming the norm. And there’s truly something delicious available for every palette and every dietary preference. Go ahead, put us through the ringer. We’re willing to bet you can find what you’re looking for.

2. We Have the Best Fairs and Festivals

Another fabulous thing about fall in Hampshire County is our affinity for fairs and festivals. Our problem is never boredom. It’s how we will choose. To help you organize your schedules, we’ve outlined a strong list of contenders to fill a long weekend in September or October. It was hard work, but we believe in the power of fall, and we really want you to experience the magic. Explore Fall Fairs and Festivals.

3. Our Outdoor Rec Will Wow You

There’s nothing quite like being outside on a fall day in the Pioneer Valley. If you were sitting here right now, you would feel what we mean. It’s just beautiful. The sky is really blue. And the change of season has motivated everyone to get outside for some fresh air. Around here, outdoor activities reign supreme, so you’re never at a loss for what to do or where to go. Sure, winter will come eventually. And until then, we’ll be outside if you need us.

4. We Have Arts and Culture Covered

All year long, everywhere you look, Hampshire County has arts and culture covered. In the fall, inspired by the energetic return of our students, and excited to feed our artsy side, we really turn up the volume. Ready for an example? The Amherst Poetry Festival is September 19th-22nd, and offers four days of recitation, slam poetry, master classes, and readings — all in celebration of the poetic legacy of Emily Dickinson. On Saturday the 21st, you can catch part of the Emily Dickinson Poetry Marathon — an all-day event where people take turns reading every one of her 1,789 poems.

5. Friendly Faces and Places

And now for the real heart of Hampshire County — our amazing people. The food and the foliage are great, but none of that would mean anything without the friendly, open-minded, peace-loving neighbors that make up our Western Mass cities and towns. We take good care of each other, and welcome everyone, every family, and every kind of love to our happy valley. So there you have it — we can’t wait to welcome you too.
